POKO's Story
Based in Ireland, Poko is a vegan and cruelty free skincare company that aims to transform your skincare routine using natural ingredients infused with high-quality CBD to supercharge your skin. At Poko, there's a product for everyone – no matter your age, gender, or skin type. Furthermore, Poko's entire line doesn't contain any harmful ingredients or additives. They're free from parabens, silicones, and synthetic substances. This means that they're safe, for even the most sensitive skin types.
Why We Do It
Poko was created from a passion to improve problematic skin. Poko’s Co-Founder, Justine O’Hanlon, suffers from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, a hormonal disorder which is common among women of reproductive age. Justine’s skin was an area of contention for her since signs of PCOS started to show on her skin with aggressive hormonal acne at just 12 years old. Having visited her GP several times, trying all sorts of tablets and topical steroid creams, she continued to struggle with a worsening condition throughout the years.
“I tried everything my doctor gave me, convincing myself the next cream would be the one, which was never the case. The contraceptive pill helped me manage my symptoms for a long time, but I didn’t want to use this forever and when I came off it, my acne flared up again.”
Eventually, she got diagnosed with PCOS many years later at 25 and that’s when she finally began to look at and understand her skin in a different way. Her passion to find skincare that truly helped hormonal breakouts like you see with women who have PCOS came from wanting to improve her own skin but also to help improve others.
1 in 10 women in Ireland and 1 in 5 women in the UK suffer from PCOS, which is only one of many hormonal imbalances that affect the skin. After learning more about PCOS and the statistics around it, she knew there had to be more people out there that felt the same.
“Being diagnosed with PCOS really helped me to look at my skin in a very different way. I have this condition which isn’t going away, so I tackle it differently and I try my best to live a healthy lifestyle. When I do get breakouts, often around my time of the month or if I’m dealing with heavy stress, I now feel confident that I can manage it.”
How We Do It
You might be asking yourself - ‘what makes Poko different from all of the other products I’ve tried?’ The answer is CBD.
Having worked as Creative Director and then CEO of his marketing company that focused heavily in the CBD space in the US & Canada, Justine approached her business partner David Hughes with the concept of Poko in early 2019.
After many attempts at finding solutions to feel comfortable with her skin, the same information about CBD kept coming up – that its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties were effective in treating acne, and she just couldn’t let it go. Hence, the idea of Poko was conceived.
Our bodies already have a naturally occurring Endocannabinoid System which comprises CB1 and CB2 receptors. In the skin, the purpose of this system is to help maintain healthy skin function.
Once CBD enters the epidermis, it penetrates to the basal and subcutaneous layers, where it helps calm inflammation, reduces blemishes, purifies pores, balances sebum production, and assists with cellular turnover.
The European Journal of Pain showed that when applied to the skin, CBD could alleviate pain and inflammation and is high in antioxidants and has anti-aging properties.
Creating a CBD skincare range was a eureka moment, if ever there was one!
